text books isimportant for students to learn English. This thesis tries to analyze collegetext books from Book One to Book Four, according to Halliday's GMtheory framework to explore the GM distribution pattern and features oftext books. This thesis tries to enrich the study of GM distribution inCollege English Integrated Course Books.Thc data involved in the thesisare 32 passages with 2,547 clauses from College English Integrated CourseBook 1- 4’ which are chosen from part two, text A of each unit. Thepassages selected from every unit of those four textbooks are sufficient inrepresenting the phenomenon of GM usages in this series of English textbook.The selected passages are analyzed with both qualitative andquantitative approaches. The numbers and the density of grammaticalmetaphor are calculated to show the distribution pattern in text books.Based on the classification of GM, grammatical metaphor usages will beidentified from Book One to Book Four, followed by the discussions overthe features of grammatical metaphor and their favourite type of GM anddistribution patterns.
1.3 Framework of the Thesis论文框架
This thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter one serves as theintroductory part which provides general information involving theresearch objective, the significance of the present study and theanalytical manner of the thesis. Chapter two mainly provides relevanttheory backbone including metaphor from traditional and contemporaryperspective; the relation of language, metaphor and cognition; theory ofHalliday's grammatical metaphor as well as the role of grammaticalmetaphor in language use. Chapter Three describes the analyticalprocess. Chapter four focuses on a data-based analysis of grammaticalmetaphor, beginning with the identifications of grammatical metaphorsin the college English Integrated course book 1-4, followed by thesuggestions for the teachers who are teaching English using this seriesof text books. Then, the changes of the distribution pattern of GM in allpassages from part two of each unit in every book will be explpred andended by the suggestions for the further improvements for text bookeditions. Chapter Five provides a brief summary of the thesis withtentative conclusion to evaluate the distribution of the GM in text booksand it also points out the limitations of this thesis.
