摘要:The author of this thesis has an experience of working in a college teachingEnglish for four years. In her teaching period, the author noticed that students’ abilityof turn-taking was weak, which influenced the normal communication in classbetween teachers and students.
2.2 Turn and Turn-taking
2.2.1 Definition of Turn and Turn-taking
Turn is the basic element of daily conversations, which is first put forward bySacks et al in 1974, but they didn’t make a clear definition of it. Therefore, a greatnumber of linguists and language researchers, aboard and at home, make great effortsto provide an exact definition of turn and the definition varies from study to study.Harris (1951) defined turn as a constant talk that a speaker makes at a particular time,and there is a silence before and after the talk of the speaker. Goodwin (1977) gave adefinition to turn as a time-fixed process. Edelsky (1981) thought that turns definedare perceived as units of talk in interaction, without taking social context into account.Then, Willis Edmonson (1981) considered that a turn means an opportunity for aninterlocutor to talk during the conversation process and the stretch of talk produced bythe interlocutor.

In traditional college English class, teachers always explain language points withexamples written on blackboard, then students listen carefully and take notes, whichwould cause students feeling bored and tired about English class and can’t meet theneed of teaching.
