摘要:The formation of global village has made people frequently aware that they arein a multilingual society, and have to switch from one language to the other in orderto communicate effectively with people from different language backgrounds.
4. Data Analysis
4.1 Data from Proficiency, Vocabulary and Writing Tests
This part will present the data from the three tests respectively, which will befollowed by discussion. And the first research question will be answered. In order to ensure that two groups are at the same English level, t-test forindependent samples is applied. In this test, we assume that the English level ofexperimental group (μ1) is the same as the that of control group (μ2), that is to say,H0:μ1=μ2. The confidence interval is typically stated at the 95% confidence level.That is to say, the significance level is 0.05, and there is 5% probability of rejectingthe hypothesis H0. Because these two groups are independent samples which have no relation witheach other, it is necessary to use the Levene’s Test to test the equality of variancesbefore testing the mean values. If two samples have equal population variances, weshould refer to the t-test value for equal variance in the first row; otherwise, thesecond row should be adopted.H0: The two independent samples have equal population variances when they takethe English proficiency test.H1: The two independent samples have different population variances when theytake the English proficiency test.

Conclusion
This study is to investigate the effects of CBI on the subjects’ target languagedevelopment. In this study, the subjects in the experimental group are from JointInstitute of SJTU, who take content based instruction courses and the subjects in thecontrol group are from other schools of SJTU, who take regular English courses. TheEnglish proficiency test is administered to ensure that subjects in the experimental andcontrol groups are at the similar English proficiency level. The vocabulary andwriting tests are administrated to examine whether there is a significant difference inthe language proficiency between two groups after a semester in which the subjects inthe experimental group attended CBI courses while the subjects in the control grouptook the conventional college English course. The content based instructionquestionnaire is designed to gather information about students’ opinions about CBIand the information of how their CBI courses influence their language development.
