Chapter Two External Environment and Internal Factors in English Learning
It is very important for us to explore the internal factors and external factors forthis phenomenon before we can put forward any ways to motivate English learning andto get useful English learning methods. As everyone knows,learners can not achievethe ultimate level of competence on English learning. Most of them find it difficult toget full target-language competence on English learning. In my opinion, there are twoaspects we need to consider: the external environment and the internal factors.
2.1 External factors
External factors refer to social factors. Social factors have a major impact onEnglish learning but probably do not influence it directly. Their effect is mediated by anumber of non-intellectual factors like learner attitudes. As Rod Ellis states, socialfactors help to shape learners' attitudes, that is to say, influence learning outcomes.When referring to target language, target language speakers, the target language culture,the social value of learning the L2 and particular uses of the target language, learnersowns different attitudes. These attitudes are possibility to reflect the particular socialsettings in which learners are. Learner's attitudes have an influence on the level of L2proficiency and they are also influenced by the achievement. Thus,learners withpositive attitudes, who achieve success, will have these attitudes reinforced. In contrast,many students begin with positive attitudes but somehow experience inadequatelearning opportunities,fail to progress as they expected and consequently becomenegative in their outlook.
Social factors also influence English learning in another way. For example, thelearners' socio-economic class and ethnic background may affect the nature and theextent of the input to which they are exposed. Sometimes their learning opportunitiesthat individual learners go through are determined by those social factors.And some specific social factors as follows which influence the attitudes held by different groups of learners and which lead to different levels of English proficiency.Age has received considerable attention from sociolinguists. Chambers andTrudgill, for instance, document variants in the speech of different generations ofspeakers in Norwich. From their research, we can conclude that people at differentages play different roles in society, which will put them in different social environmentand will more or less have an influence on their English learning.An individual's social class is typically determined by such factors as income,level of education and occupation. It is customary to divide it into four groups: lowerclass, working class, lower middle class, and upper middle class.
