Chapter Two Learner Autonomy, Self-access and Measurement
Chapter One has shown how the evolution of learner autonomy has led to thecurrent situation in which learner autonomy is regarded universally as an importanteducational goal. Within this context, one of the main topics is how learner autonomycan be promoted and developed in an effective way. Our intention in this chapter is toprovide an overview of the studies and debates surrounding learner autonomy,self-access learning and assessment of autonomy in language learning. We begin bylooking at the many facets of the term—learner autonomy in language learning. Thenwe proceed with an overview of the approaches to fostering autonomy in languagelearning, with special focus on the self-access learning approaches. Finally we discussissues related to the measurement for language autonomy. A better understanding ofthe debates involved helps to highlight the necessity of the present study.
2.1 LA Defined in Language Learning
The concept of learner autonomy has various sources and has been defined,developed, redefined and reconstructed from different perspectives during the past 30years, even by the same writers. As a result, the theoretical framework of learnerautonomy in language learning is far from coherent, “beset by conflicting ideologies,roiling inconsistencies and fragmentary theories” (Oxford, 2003:75). Conflicts interminology can be found in both semantics and ideologies. This section provides abackdrop for the study itself by first summarizing a variety of trends within thetheoretical discussions of learner autonomy in language learning.
