摘要:The relationship between language and culture is very complicated. English teachers should consider the position and the effect of culture- introduction in the English teaching deeply, and then do some relative adjustments in preparing the courses.
en conflict in cross-cultural communication. The author thinks it is important to introduce culture when teaching English. Teachers and should let students focus more attention on cultural communication information so as to be more efficient in cross-cultural communication. Sometimes problems in cross - cultural communication occur, such as cultural bump and sometimes cultural shock.
According to Carol M.Archer, “a cultural bump occurs when an individual from one culture finds himself or herself in a different, strange, or uncomfortable situation when interacting with persons of a different culture. This phenomenon results from a difference in the way people from one culture behave in a particular situation from people in another culture.”(J.M.Valdes,1986: 171)
Most Chinese people are hospitable to their guests, friends and relatives, but they tend to be indifferent to the strangers. While in America, the problem of “family” has become a hot topic .The typical “kernel family” in fifties is dying out. In the nineties, more than 33 percent of family ended in divorce. More than 25 percent of American families with a child younger than seven or eight years old are supported by unmarried girls, and only 50 percent of American families are formed by married husband and wife. Consequently, the concept of family and the viewpoint on family have greatly changed. In the nineties, many new terms occurred in American social life reflecting this social phenomenon, such as, single-parent family, biological parents, teen mother. However, these words rarely occur in Chinese. So in cross – cultural communication, this kind of phenomenon will cause difficulties in understanding. Cultural shock and misunderstanding is a common experience for a person learning a second language in a second culture. Cultural shock refers to phenomena ranging from mild irritability to deep psychological panic and crisis. That is why many Chinese students studying abroad often long for our motherland—what they are missing is cultural atmosphere. Teachers and should let students focus more attention on cultural communication information so as to be more efficient in cross-cultural communication. Sometimes problems in cross - cultural communication occur, such as cultural bump and sometimes cultural shock.
2.2 Chinese Culture and English Culture being Different
There is a great difference between Chinese culture and the culture of English-speaking countries. When teaching English, teachers should not only teach English language itself, but most importantly it’s culture.
The comparison of other cultures with the language being taught opens great vista for the teacher and provides a basis for better understanding of persons from other background as well as supplying new sights into approaches to teaching L2. Only after coming to know, understand, and appreciate something of other cultures can we realize the importance of providing cultural cules to assist the language learner in a new environment and recognize what values and behavior patterns of new culture the learner has most need to know (Valdes 1986: 49-50).
English,as a second language of most Chinese students, has its own culture which is different from Chinese culture. These differences produce many barriers in the intercultural communication. To eliminate these barriers, it must first be acquainted with the differences between these two cultures. S
