Conclusion

For the SLA, the lexical chunks are served as the ideal unit. And the lexicalchunk’s teaching is a new direction in English instruction, thus, it is of greatimportance in conducting studies on the lexical chunks’ teaching. In this study, thelexical chunks’ instruction were applied by the author to the regularly scheduledEnglish listening classes, with the purpose to study its effects on college learners’news listening competence. The teaching emphasis was put on the second languagelistening field. This research was only a starting point. Can lexical chunks’ instructionin the regularly scheduled English classes aid the learners’ writing, reading, or oralcompetence in SLA? Does the teaching of lexical chunks accelerate Englishacquisition development? Further studies in this area will be necessary undoubtedly. An increasing number of researches require to be done before the role of the teaching 54of lexical chunks in the English acquisition can be fully understood.
From the studies on lexical chunks, we got to know that the more lexical chunksstudents master and store in the long-term memory, the more easily the learners canunderstand the input. Moreover, chunking is also a crucial factor contributing toenlarging learners’ working memory’s capacity, and lightening their working memoryload, improving the news listening top-down processing. So, lexical chunks take acrucial part in facilitating L2 learning students to enhance their English news listeningcompetence. In order to testify all this, the author carried out a research and appliedthe lexical chunks’ instructional method creatively to the English teaching. As a result,it was testified to be an effective and feasible way, which can aid college learners toimprove their ability of lexical chunks’ application and consequently facilitate them todevelop their competence in news listening comprehension.Though there are few limitations in the current study, all the research questionshave been confirmed, and the study purpose has been achieved. In this experimentalstudy, the findings can be considered as a supplement to the Michael Lewis’s theoryof the lexical approach and the teaching lexical chunks’ Nattinger and DeCarrico’sstudy of instructing lexical chunks. Moreover, this experimental study also provide anew perspective for the future research into this field.
