was published in 1901,and German Idioms in 1904.The study of idioms obviously increased greatly year by year. The number of paperswhich focused on this subject boomed by 900% according to a ten-year accumulatedcomparison of 1881-1890 with 2001-2010. Except for the increasing number, the subjectstudied were also expanded with the time goes by. By previous examples we can see that inthe beginning scholars tended to conclude and listed idioms that was used in a limited area.Later around the 1990s they started to consider factors involved; translation, comparison, etc.As a phenomenon in a foreign language, idioms were paid less attention by Chinese tillthe 1980s—later than western study for almost a century. The early study of English idiom inChina is vague and rough. Writers at that time mainly discuss idiom in a very casual and idlelevel. Going though the CNKI, 28 papers refer to idiom in the year 1980 were found, betweenwhich they were mostly nominated in an extremely summarized wayThe GeneralCharacteristics of English Idioms, A General Comment of English Idiom,About EnglishIdioms, etc.Presently in China there appears to be many scholars who started to pay attention toidioms. Thousands of new articles about idioms were published each year. Among which theymainly fall into such realms as translation of idioms, comparison of idioms in Chinese andEnglish, etc. To give a further study of idiom in its comprehensive usage can be theconclusion of nowadays study of idiom in China. We can also find an intriguing phenomenonthat the westerners have already done with this area. As having been previously pointed out, westerners tended to study idioms as a subject of translation and comparative study in the yeararound 1990s. After two decades, today they shift their focal point to other branches instead ofas we Chinese have now studied. Generally speaking, most of their studies can be classifiedinto four categories: translation and acquisition of idiom, study into the familiarity of idiom(this part is rarely discussed by non-native speakers, so do our Chinese),to use idiom ortheories of idiom as a medicine healing some diseases, to study into idioms emerged in somegreat literary output. As a representative of the first category the most representative exampleis Coopers' Processing of Idioms by L2 Learners of English which was published in 1999. Itemphasized on acquisition. For the second one, there are two beautiful embodiments: TheComprehension of Familiar and less Familiar Idioms written by Wendy. A. Schweigert andThe Figurative and Literal Senses of Idioms, or All Idioms are not Used Equally by Stephen J.Popiel and Ken McRea. Studying into familiarity of English idioms gives us a good chance toknow the history of idioms and English Culture. The third part can be illustrated in theirstudies of how to cure diseases such as William's Syndrome, Schizophrenia, down syndromeand Alzheimer's disease, etc. under the help of idiom. The Interpersonal Idiom inShakespeare,Donne and Early Modern Culture by Nancy Selleck and The Geometry ofModernism: The Vorticist Idioms in Lewis, Pound H. D and Yeats by Marinance Thormahlenare the best examples of the forth category, in which they search into the masterpiece of somefamous writers about their usage of idioms.
