Fourthly, Americans have to permeate patriotism among the living environment. In America, it is a common phenomenon of naming after some famous figures the place, city, street, forest, graveyard, company, airport, school and other different types of site. For instance, they have Washington, the capital, the memorial hall of Lincoln, Jefferson and Roosevelt, and the culture center of Kennedy. There are 50 states all together in America and there are cities or counties named after the president’s name in each state. The talented thoughts, extraordinary experience, noble spirit and outstanding contributions of these great men can edify reform and encourage people in such places forever. (Liang Fang, 43)
2. School Education of Patriotism
Another way is the school education of patriotism which contains two points. One is the education of manifest courses. The courses of American university, high school and primary school are not united and there is a great difference in different states, regions and schools. But we can still find the common character of the course of American moral education in so many various courses. The American moral education mainly involves the department of citizen, the department of history, the department of culture and literature, and the alike. A survey in 1978 showed the common pattern of the department of society in American school was that, from the kindergarten to the twelfth grade, children must learn the following courses in turn: oneself, school, community, family, and clansman, even neighbor; then the history of their own state, the geography of their own community, the history of America, the culture of the west hemisphere; at last, the geography and history of the world, the citizens and the culture of the world, the history of the world, the American government. The contents are from easy to hard, from family to nation then to the
world and there is a large proportion of geography and history. The aim is to help teenagers understand their hometown and country better. So the American spirit and the notion of patriotism can go deep into the hearts of its people. We Americans, the teaching material of history in American middle schools now, records the origin development and prosperity of America for the students and to enhance the confidence and the sense of mission of them for their nations and country.
Another one is the implicit courses. The main feature of American moral education is the infiltration education. The thoughts that the school always persists in are to love their country and freedom. No matter what the young people have read, including textbooks, selected works and historical books, almost every page mentions patriotism. All the courses in American school are filled with American spirit and the education of patriotism. The New York Times has recorded a piece of news about the teaching and learning in classroom of an American woman teacher in New Jersey: when she was giving the lesson of grammar to the class and mentioned the growing of students and job hunting, she taught her students that they would have professional ethics in the future; she always spent half an hour teaching the sense of duty, will and sympathy before she started a formal lesson.
