Those phenomena help the outside people to know that country. Especial those people who have not been to a certain country, when they taste a kind of food or drink, the impression of food and drink which they get is an impression of that country. This point is very important. The information which comes from food or drink through a direct way transmits to the taster. That way is eating or drinking when people are eating foreign food in their own country what they get from food or drink they will consider it as an impression of that foreign country. This point is very important.
Nobility and pragmatism which reveals in British food and drink is a very good propaganda. That propaganda is very effective. Imagine when a foreigner is drinking afternoon tea, he must feel the nobility strongly. Because of the etiquette, the refreshment and even the story which tells the background of afternoon tea are giving him a impression—drinking afternoon tea is a noble movement. Under such circumstance, food and drink are not substance, but they have become a representative of a country. In the same way, when a foreigner is tasting a delicious British dish—Yorkshire putting that pudding’s various materials make him realize Britain is really pay attention to nutrient. So, he gets an impression that Britain is a pragmatic nation. Nobility and pragmatism are two good characters. A foreigner, who is eating a delicious British food, will feel Britain is an excellent nation when he feels nobility and pragmatism from what he eats. If British food and drink could give a very good impression to other countries’ people, they could be called special diplomats. So, the significance of nobility and pragmatism in British food is that they could make other countries’ people have a good impression. If that good impression is received by most people in the world, then Britain’s national status is improved too.

National character is a collection of values, attitude and attribute of a nation. In British national character, British has two distinctive aspect—nobility and pragmatism. Those two differences make Britain distinctive with other countries and deeply influence the Britain’s society. As two important aspects in British national character, they must have been affects something in the society.
That is a causal relationship between national character on food and drink. Food and drink could embody British national character. Britain’s national character has two special aspects: nobility and pragmatism. British’s food and drink could reveal them. Nobility mainly displays on afternoon tea. Pragmatism displays on the materials of food, the coking methods and British’s conception of food. Afternoon tea originated from the aristocracy of ancient Britain. So, at the beginning it inherits the noble blood from the aristocracy. When people are drinking afternoon tea, they could feel a deeply noble feeling. Although today’s afternoon tea is not restricted to aristocracy, but people still observe the complicated etiquette. That etiquette comes from past noble men and was past from generation to generation. So, through several hundred years past the etiquette still keep its noble blood.
