摘要:The improvement of English writing skills is nowadays the main task for Englishteaching and learning. It is also an important quality standard of English language teaching.But in present English teaching field, there are various problems.
2.2Definition of Metacognition
Metacognition was first proposed by Flavell(1976).He defines it as“active monitoringand consequent regulation and orchestration of congnitive progress to achieve cognitivegoals.”He (1976) References to metacognition included anything that related to one’sknowledge of cognitive processes and products.The processes of thinking are emphasizedin the course of metacognition.As Stewart and Tei (1983) explained,”Cognition refers tohaving skills;Metacognition refers to the awareness and consciousness of the control overthose skills . ”Wellman(1985)described it as a “ person’s cognition aboutcognition.”Metacognition is a well-developed understanding and the strategic use of one’sown cognitive processes;it is the ability of knowing when and how to use one’s thinkingskills to solve problems in understanding.Wenden(1987:573)says that metacognition is“the process that underlies the efficient use of strategies and the essence of intelligentactivity . ’’ Williams and Burden(2000) stress metacognition is central to effectivelearning.Though they hold different views on metacognition,they share the same pointthat metacognition is knowing about knowing,and the regulation of congnition,which canhelp be autonomous learners.Numerous researchers(Brown and baker 1978;Wenden 1987:Schraw2001) confirm the positive effect of metacognition on SLA in the decades.Wenden suggests that teaching beginning level students the language of metacognition begiven high priority in order to receive instruction in learning strategies.The latest research(Wu Hongyun&Liu Renqing 2004) in China reveals that metacognitive strategies aresignigicant variables to affect EFL writing competence directly.
