摘要:本文是一篇英语教学法论文,本研究以非英语专业大二学生为研究对象,进行了为期12周的议论文读后续写教学实验。

d applies it to the teaching of college English argumentativewriting,aiming to improve the coherence of college students’argumentative writingand their writing level.The author hopes that by teaching the five types of TP patternsand assigning continuation tasks,students can imitate and apply the patterns whilelearning them in the original text so that they can use them more flexibly in their L2argumentative writing to organize sentences and paragraphs effectively to promote thecoherence of the writing.

Chapter Two Literature Review

2.1 Studies on Thematic Progression Patterns and L2 ArgumentativeWriting

2.1.1 Foreign Studies

Foreign research on TP patterns and L2 argumentative writing can be dividedinto three main parts.Firstly,researchers conduct studies combining the TP patternswith L2 discourse analysis.They found that TP patterns can promote the developmentof the discourse(Downing,A.,2001;Crompton,P.,2004,etc.).

Secondly,studies are concentrated on the role of TP patterns in L2 writing.Manyscholars believe that TP patterns are essential elements in forming a coherent text andsuggest that teachers should teach more about them due to their help in organizingsentences together effectively.Jalilifar(2010a)analyzed the use of TP patterns inIranian English learners’argumentative essays,which showed that TP patterns canhelp students with their writing,and them can be effectively taught in class.Soleymanzadeha&Gholami(2014)suggested that TP patterns should be used as ascoring criterion for essays in high-stakes examinations and teachers’feedback shouldinvolve the use of TP patterns in students’writing.Hawes(2015)stated that ifstudents want to develop and organize their writing more clearly,they need to acquiremore skills,and mastering TP patterns is a good option for them.Meanwhile,he alsodemonstrated that teachers should teach more or less knowledge related to TPpatterns.

Thirdly,some studies have found that in students’L2 writings,different TPpatterns are used in different genres.Bloor(1991)investigated the use of TP patternsin medical essays and news reports,finding that the two types of essays use differenttypes of patterns.Since medical essays contain descriptive paragraphs such asintroduction,research methods,and research results,they tend to have a highfrequency of using TP with continuous themes with a descriptive function.In contrast,news reports contain more explanatory discourse,so the linear TP is used more oftenin such texts.

2.2 Studies on Continuation Task

2.2.1 Foreign Studies

There is no direct research abroad on the continuation task.In foreign countries,scholars have focused on the connection between reading and writing.Widdowson(1978)argued that reading and writing should be taught together,because learners canlearn writing skills from reading materials and learn reading skills from writingproduction.Bracewell&Frederiksen(1982)pointed out that the process of writing isactually a higher-level process belonging to reading and thinking.Fitzgerald&Shanahan(2000)demonstrated that reading and writing are two complementaryactivities because they involve similar cognitive structures and contexts.
