OZANAM SCHOLAR PROGRAM INDEPENDENT STUDY 2010-11
Goal: The Independent Study was designed to give junior scholars the opportunity to submit a research proposal related to a social justice issue (outside of the classroom) under the supervision of a faculty advisor. The proposal may lead to an actual research study under the supervision of your mentor, the faculty advisor.
Topic: All topics must be chosen based on the following themes:
a) Education b) Homeless c) Hunger
d) Health e) Poverty
Settings: We encourage topics that are related to our partner sites.
Timeline:
Abstract: In 350-500 words, discuss your research goals, using the following guidelines:
a) Clearly explain your topic (background and rationale for the proposed research)
b) Briefly discuss why you chose this topic
research paper(the importance of this topic to you)
c) Postulate what you hope to achieve/find through your research.
Abstract Email your abstract to Charissa Townsend at
[email protected] no later Deadline than April 30, 2010.
Individual Individual Conferences will be arranged with each scholar to review the
Conferences research proposal abstract. All topics must be approved before a student begins his/her research proposal. A conference will be conducted prior to the end of the sophomore year.
Faculty Scholars will be mentored by a full-time Faculty Members. The VISA
Mentor Faculty Research Consortium (FRC) has identified appropriate faculty members from each college/school and will assist you in identifying an appropriate mentor for your project. Students are given the opportunity to choose their own mentors by submitting the resume of the faculty of their choice to Charissa Townsend.
Independent Your independent study and reflection paper is due no later than March 1,
Study 2011. Please follow the suggested style and outline format below. Students Deadline with the best projects will be selected to present their findings.
Post Research a) Student Research Week: All Scholars must submit their research for Student Requirement Research Week.
B) Independent Research Conference: All scholars will participate in an Independent Research Conference with Sophomore Scholars. Select research project will be presented at this time.
Manuscript Style Please adhere to the following for your independent study submission:
a) Cover Page
b) 20-30 written pages (approximately 6000 words)
c) Font Style – Times New Roman
d) APA Style
e) Margins – 1.5” (left and right) and 1” (top and bottom)
f) Font Size – 12
g) Line Spacing - Double
h) Bar, Charts, Graphs, Pictures where applicable (not part of the 20-30 written pages)
i) Bibliography
