3.1.2 Noninterest incomes

With foreign banks operating such businesses, through labour mobility and demonstration, technology spillovers are more likely to occur.At the same time, China’s banks have known their lack of competence in banking business of nontraditional and want to catch up. For this purpose, their efforts have been reflected in the active learning from foreign banks. For example, they would form joint ventures with foreign banks to develop credit cards business and invite foreign equity partners to help to develop new banking services.

3.1.3 Costs

Operational costs include personnel expenses and salary and rents.In the long run, the increase of foreign bank’s number is expected to reduce costs of domestic banks.But in the short run, it would increase their cost.According to the FDI spillover theory, foreign entry intensifies the local industry’s competition. So it is helpful to reduce cost among local banks. But Lensink and Hermes (2004) have observed that cost reduction only appears in the long run. They discussed that in the short run, they would need more expenses in order to defend market share and gain competitiveness. Local banks would spend more on technologies and new facilities to improve existing services and implement new services. They would also like to increase salaries to attract experienced managers and skilled personnel to strengthen their human capital. In the China’s banking industry, it is likely to observe this short-run scenario.

3.2 Research methods

The exploratory research and descriptive research would be used in this research. Exploratory research provides insights into and comprehension of an issue or situation. It is a type of research conducted because a problem has not been clearly defined. Exploratory research helps determine the best research design, data collection method and selection of subjects.
