Abstract
I. Introduction
Since the implementation of open-up and economic reform policy in 1987, China has achieved tremendous economy success. The Chinese economy maintains at an annual increasing rate of 7 percent from 1979 to 2007. In 2007, the total export trade volume has reached more than 9 trillion RMB and the import has amounted to 7.35 trillion RMB. The trade surplus is more than 2 trillion RMB. The total foreign trade volume rose from US$20 billion in 1978 to US$2 trillion in 2007. The foreign exchange reserve has reached at 1.5 trillion US dollars in 2007(China statistical yearbook, 2006). In addition, China has become the hottest destinations for foreign investment inflow. Exchange rate is a price of one country’s currency to trade with another country’s currency. Exchange rate plays an important role in the foreign trade and economy development in modern China. The Renminbi (RMB) is the currency of the P. R. China, which principal unit is yuan.
China’s RMB exchange rate regime has experienced from fix exchange rate before the reform period, to pegged to the US dollar, to a managed floating exchange rate regime. From 1978 until 2005, China’s currency had been tightly pegged at 8.2756 yuan to the U.S. dollar. In 2005, the People’s Bank of China—the central bank of China, removed the peg to the dollar and transferred to a managing floating exchange rate based on market supply and demand with
Reference to a basket of foreign currencies (The People's Bank of China, 2005). This year, the Renminbi traded at less than 7 yuan per US dollar which hit the highest value of RMB against US dollar in a decade. This phenomenon draws economists and politicians’ attention to the future RMB’s movement.
The exchange rate is closely linked to GDP, inflation, trade, interest rate and these macroeconomic factors. This study firstly reviews the movement of RMB against US dollars exchange rate movement since 1985. The China’s exchange rate regime development is also studied as well. Then, the study collects statistical data on exchange rate, inflation, FDI, trade volumes to analyse their relations by using Eviews software. Finally, the study predicts the future development of RMB exchange rate and further studies are recommended.
