Shi Cha Hai Table Tennis Shop’s Expansion to an E-shop

  Introduction

Shi Cha Hai Table Tennis Shop(什刹海乒乓球店) was opened by myself in the spring of 2003. This shop provides a range of equipments for professionals and amateurs, including balls, rubbers, blades, clothing, footwear, and etc. It is located next to Shi Cha Hai Sports School in the Ping An Avenue(平安大街), and attracts a number of customers.

However, my shop is too small in scale. It only occupies an area of 15 square meters, so it is impossible to stock a comprehensive range of equipments from all the leading brands. It consists of only 2 persons, a shop assistant and I. During the past two years, there are more and more clients who made complaints for few choices on brands, short business hour, traffic jams, and unsatisfied technological request.

Small enterprises have been empowered by the PC and the application of information technologies. One person without any staff can handle correspondence, bill customers, and maintain a credible business presence- all surprisingly easily. So the best solution to my shop’s problems is to expand the shop to an e-shop on the Internet.

Based on the hypothesis that the e-shop can serve multiple markets and customers through adopting 24 hours online order, real time chat room, forum online, e-mail, and other practical modern technologies, a two-month project was launched to design and construct the online shop from January 1th, 2005 to February 28th, 2005. A series of activities was planned and carried out, such as getting a loan from bank, signing contract with an IT company to design the software, purchasing computer and accessories and getting them installed, signing contract with ISP and getting a website address, renting a storage room, ordering new stocks, and so on.

Before putting the plan into practice, I also devised some measures to control and manage potential risks.

The outputs of the project were an e-shop which could provide convenient and efficient service to customers and a storage room with comprehensive range of stocks.

The total cost of the project was 90,500 Yuan. It included designing software, purchasing computer and accessories, renting storage room, ordering news stocks, and etc.

In the whole process of this project, I adopted those helpful techniques and methods which John Hilton introduced in his book “Practical Business Project and Proposal (2001)”.
