a of wisdom, Manjushri. Their encounter is described in the text of a sutra important to Chinese Buddhists because it demonstrated how a wealthy townsperson or layperson could participate in a discussion of Buddhist doctrine on equal terms with a bodhisattva-a perfected, enlightened being. It reassured people that it was possible to honor Buddhist spiritual values as well as the family obligations embedded in Confucianism, which was native to China. The stele also includes images of Shakyamuni's disciples, monks, and important bodhisattvas, and the theme of rebirth in a Buddhist paradise. Four reborn souls emerge from the lotus blossoms on the canopy above the main image.https://www.51lunwen.org/ArtandDesign/
These two steles both used a lotus as an adornment and also for a symbol. We can also have a look at about lots of other Chinese Buddhist articles, what we can find is the same pattern of lotus. The lotus is a pretty essential part of Chinese Buddhism system.
In Chinese Buddhist history, lotus always stands for different symbols in the different periods of the history. The symbols have been divided into six forms which stand for special meanings. It also relates to the different areas, the shapes of lotus, and what kind of art works that has been put on it. For the reason that the appearing of lotus and appearing of Buddhist stele in the south of China almost happened at the same time, obviously prove that there are some connections between those two items.
According to the Buddhist records, the lotus related to the born of Gautama Mooney. Actually, the first time when lotus emerged in China was not occasionally. About three hundred years before, lotus was used to be carved at the bottom of a stone lion pillar, which as the Indian symbol at that time.
The reason why I chose this art is that I have been attracted by its multidimensional engraver and the special inscription. The engraver has shown the artisan’s exquisite skill and creative ingenuities. And the inscription displayed the history background of this sculpture, what just made them more visual and specific. Only when we have some clues about the art work’s sitting, we can have a good understanding of the work. Also, this art contains all the important characteristics a work from Tang dynasty period should have. So, that’s why I like this art a lot.
