Chapter One Literature Review


1.1 A Review of Researches on Culture Teaching Abroad
The history of Western foreign language teaching is quite long. Lots of teachingmethods are created, such as Grammar-Translation Method, the Direct Method, theSituational method, the Audio-lingual Teaching, Communicative Approach, theNatural Approach, and so on. Those approaches have deep influence on cultureteaching in foreign language teaching. At the early time, learning a foreign language was to get access to its literature,that is to say, the purpose of learning a foreign language was for reading. AlthoughBrook (1964) stated that culture in its refinement had long been attached to languageteaching, it was in the end of 19thcentury that the importance of culture teaching inforeign language Education was recognized.In 1880, the French educator F. Gouin in his book, The Art of Teaching andStudying Language, firstly pointed out the importance of culture teaching, which didnot arouse much attention at that time. “Strohmeyer, one of the later DirectMethodists, advocated that the principle that introducing the pupils to the foreignculture should be one of the most important aims of languageteaching”(Xiao,2005:89). Then in 1900, through the Report of the Committee ofTwelve, America Modern Language Association officially acknowledged the teachingof European civilization and recommended it for school curricula.

1.2 A Review of Researches on Culture Teaching in China
The history of Chinese foreign language education can trace back to theestablishment of the first foreign language school, Huis School of Higher Education,built in 1289. In the early years, the purpose of learning foreign language is to seekbenefits from interchanges with other countries. In modern times (from 1840-1949),in order to protect from foreign invasion, political-orientated foreign languageteaching is put forward. Culture teaching and learning at that time mainly focus onscience, literature, and Marxist ideology. From 1949-1966, Chinese foreign languageeducation is strongly influenced by Soviet Union, both in teaching method andmaterials.It is in 1980s that more and more language researchers begin to realize theimportance of culture teaching in foreign language education. Then a vast variety ofculture teaching theories and pedagogies are introduced to China from Westerncountries. Combined with the actual situation of foreign language teaching in china,scholars set up various culture teaching models for Chinese students. Three periodswill be presented in the following sections.

Chapter Two Theoretical Background


2.1 Language, Culture and Communication
The interpretation of culture has never stopped. “Culture” is used with a veryhigh frequency in modern society, for example, people often comment a person by hislevel of culture and cultural literacy. It is not exaggerated to say culture isall-embracing. Culture is multidimensional and complex. Scholars and practitionersfrom different disciplines have different viewpoints on culture. Here are some ofthem.Edward B. Tylor, the pioneer English Anthropologist, firstly used the term in hisbook, Primitive Culture, in 1871.
