Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
With the development of globalization, international communication is becoming more and more frequent. Listening is a basic skill in the process of communication. Moreover, in the studies of the second language acquisition and foreign language teaching, listening is one of the key research topics. (Rubin 1994). Listening is an important means to receive language input and information. Therefore, language learners should not neglect the role and importance of listening in language learning. The purpose of language learning is to communicate. As a kind of most commonly used expression ability, listening plays a very important role in our daily communications and education process, people always rank listening comprehension skills as the first of the five English learning basic skills. Listening is an important part of language learning and communication activities. According to the
statistics, during people’s language communication, time for listening is 45%, time for speaking is 30%, while time for reading and writing respectively takes up 16% and 9%. As we all know, the acquisition of listening skills is the basis which leads to furthering language learning. But, in striking contrast with the importance of listening, most students’ listening level in secondary vocational schools is relatively poor, which has become a serious obstacle to their language learning and communication activities. How to renew educational ideas, actively advocate and carry out English listening autonomous learning in order to effectively improve most students’ English listening level is the responsibility of English teachers and education leaders.

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Study
1.2.1 Purpose of the Study
Based on the investigation of students' autonomous learning ability in English listening in secondary vocational school, the author intends to find out the main problems and the causes leading to the lack of of students' autonomy in English listening. Then the author carries out the empirical research on improving students’ autonomous learning ability through autonomous learning
strategy training. The purpose of the study is to help students raise their autonomous learning awareness, thereby to improve their autonomous learning ability in English listening and ultimately promote students’ comprehensive English ability.
