Chapter 1 Introduction
Writing is an output activity but it also needs input as support. It can not only embodies students’English proficiency degree, but also shows current English teaching level. However, it is generallyacknowledged that writing proficiency is difficult to improve because writing is a concrete manifestation ofall students’ comprehensive ability. However, student’s writing proficiency is the weakest part among fourbasic skills. The reason is that teachers don’t pay enough attention to students’ writing proficiency and lackscientific training methods so their writing proficiency is weaker than other aspects. Therefore, it isindispensable for teachers to utilize new teaching models to improve their writing proficiency.
1.1 Research Background
In 2001, “ New Standard English Curriculum” was issued by Ministry of
Education which containedfive-dimensional writing goals. Students are required to be able to:(1) Prepare materials according to writing requirements;(2) Draft
essay, passage and modify them independently under teacher’s guidance;(3) Use conjunctions to express sequence and logical relationships;(4) Describe a person or event briefly;(5) Write operating instructions or simple paragraphs according to schema.The New Standard for English Curriculum also puts forward quantitative standard in students’ writing,speaking, listening and reading ability. It also proposes five dimensions of English writing evaluation:content, language usage, mechanic and coherence, format, target reader communication.The New Standard for English Curriculum not only attaches great importance to language knowledgebut also language skills, learning strategies, emotional attitude and cultural awareness. The educationquality and student’s capable of dealing with things are also stressed.

1.2 Research Purpose
The author tries to verify whether it is effective to apply to process genre approach in improving juniorhigh school students’ English letter writing proficiency in content, language and mechanic.The author plans to explore the feasibility of utilizing process genre approach in junior high schoolstudents’ English letter writing for finding methods to improve students’ writing proficiency. Practicalsignificance is also important. In the junior high school learning stage, teachers first put forward writing theme and requirements then ask students to write a passage instead of providing students with largeamounts of input material, let alone how to guide students to use these materials. Therefore, students’writing proficiency is low without meeting the requirements of New Standard for English Curriculum.Their basic writing skills aren’t well developed. As a matter of fact, a number of students dislike Englishwriting in the depth of their heart. It is imperative to use valid ways to transform current English writingteaching and learning situation. Nowadays, English is closely associated with our daily life and writing isconsidered as a tool to express people’s feelings. As far as English writing is considered, it also has somefunctions. First, the writing process can not only strengthen students’ grammar but also train their ability ofusing idioms and vocabularies. What’s more, students tend to make full use of new sentence mechanics todeliver their viewpoint during the stage of composing composition.
