Chapter One Introduction

Reading is one of the most important way to acquire knowledge and information. The process ofreading is an interactive process, but the traditional teaching mode is that the teacher regard the article asthe carrier, spread grammar and language knowledge to students, which ignored the students’ subjective,and made students have no interest in reading. The modern education advocates people-oriented, based onthe development of people, makes students and activities as center, and cultivate students’ autonomouslearning ability. Interactive teaching emphasized the students as the main subject of learning.

1.1 Background of the Study
With the globalization of economic and information, English as one of the most important informationcarrier, has become the most widely used language in every fields of human life, trade contacts,information transmission, cultural exchange, etc. it can be said that English has more and more importantposition in international competition. Improve foreign language level, cultivate high-quality foreignlanguage talents, not only reflects one country’s level of education, but also related to the development ofthe national economy. English is considered as a basic subject in school education, which plays animportant role in middle school students’ learning. Meanwhile, how to learn English well has become acommon concern of teachers, students and parents. Hu Chundong (1993) said in English teachingmethodology: reading ability is the most important ability, and if the reading speed can’t be improved, itwould seriously affect the teaching quality in middle school.The English curriculum standard of ordinary senior middle school (experiment) put forward thefollowing requirements about the objective of English reading skill: “find the main information that theauthor wants to express, recognize the language structure, content, the sequence and process of thingsdevelopment according to the requirements; identify the main ideas and concept of the connotation;recognize, identify, contrast facts, evidences and views, definition and the supposed information; evaluateand judge about the facts and evidences; get conclusion according to the facts and evidences afforded inthe text; make logical judgments.”(教育部,2003)Reading as one of the four basic skills of learning English, it is important both in practice and testpaper. In the middle school English reading class, many teachers still use the traditional teaching method,teacher-centered and never consider the student’ reception degree and the learning effect, which kills thestudents’ enthusiasm and initiative, and the result is the students are weak and slow in reading.

1.2 Purpose of the Study
The urgent mission is to establish the reading teaching model, which can adapt to the teachingrequirements of new teaching materials, promote mutual development of teachers and students, transformthe teacher centered into students-centered, in which teachers play the role as guiders, organizers andassistors. Therefore, the establishment of interactive learning model based on students-centered is animportant mission to all English teachers in senior middle school.For many students, English reading is an important and difficult part to them, especially to those wholearn English as a second or foreign language.
