This report is produced for the purpose of providing low cost airlines vital information on how their external environment provides both opportunity and threat to the industry. It later focuses on Ryanair which is the leading low cost airline. The report begins by analysing the current external environment of low cost airline. Using strategic evaluation, the recommendation is that low cost airlines should focus on the opportunities which arise as it makes the industry more attractive. It examines the internal strength and weakness of Ryanair, and further discusses the core competences.

The air transport is an increasing growing industry (IATA, 2000). According to BAA (2008) it is an industry with substantial growth ahead in the future years. Low cost airlines are very important for the growth of the economy and businesses (Domenico, 2010). A lot of businesses are international and might have to travel very often. Low cost airlines encourage travel which improves tourism.

Low cost airlines do not have historic cost or large debt (BAA, 2006); this allows them to make profit even through tough times like the 9/11. Their pricing is based on demand and supply. BAA is in agreement that the different pricing allows low cost airlines to charge customers different prices.

There have been unstable times within the airline industry which have lead to the down turn of the progress of the airline. These were caused by external factors. According to Tsiakkiros (2002) the ongoing, essential and unexpected changes which occur in the society create an uncertain environment and have an impact on the whole industry. To analysis the external factors of low cost airlines PESTLE framework would be used. Kotler (1998) says that PESTLE is a good strategic tool for understanding an industry’s environment; knowing the growth or decline of it.

Thompson (2002) recognize that the economic conditions and other external factors affect the success of any industry as it affects the capital, cost, demand and supply. PESTLE stand for Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal, and Environmental.

The terrorism level is high in the country both internal and external; Bomb equipment was found in the second week of January 2011 (Guardian, 2011). BBC (2009) reported that there was an increase in security after the bomb scare on the flight to America in 2009. This affected the industry both positively and negatively. Improvement of security for all airlines in order to put the customers at ease in other to want to travel by air, however the scare put fear in customers, there was a reduction in travel it didn’t affect low cost airlines as much as the large airlines. These shows that even with the political aspect low cost airlines are attractive as they still did better than other airlines.
