1.1 Rationale of the study研究目的
Humor is a specific linguistic phenomenon which has www.51lunwen.org the linguistic researchers’focus for a long time. It has been analyzed from many perspectives such as philosophy,sociology, psychology and physiology etc. Many important theories on verbal humor are putforward. Superiority theories, Release theories, and Incongruity theories are three traditionaltheories that dominate the western linguistic world. The past two decades saw the developmentof pragmatics as an independent linguistics branch. With the advancement of theoretical studyand cross-disciplinary research, the integration of verbal humor and pragmatics has become hottopic for humor study and research focus has shifted from the static and isolated study onwords to dynamic, multi-dimensional research on daily life communication. But research onverbal humor under the Speech Act Theory is relatively new. This thesis adopts the Speech ActTheory to study humorous utterances in the American sitcom The Big Bang Theory and theauthor analyzes it from pragmatic perspectives to see how humor is produced in this sitcom.American sitcom is used as the corpus of the study. The reason for choosing Americansitcom is that American sitcom is the miniature of people’s life in America. American sitcomhas the authentic languages and can provide specific scenes which are similar to our daily life.It has dynamic lifestyle and exotic cultures which can draw people’s attention. Humorousutterances in the sitcom are the key to the construction of comic effects. Through the way ofappreciating humorous utterances in the sitcom, people will know American culture andlanguage better.With the development of introduction of American sitcom, more and more people areinterested in these TV series. The author uses the latest American sitcom The Big Bang Theoryas the data source in the hope of providing the systematical and detailed analysis on verbalhumor. The Big Bang Theory is mainly about the daily life of four genius friends in physics andone waitress .This sitcom wins many rewards and is well-known for its ubiquitous humor. Thissitcom is full of humorous utterances and through the witty dialogues it brings a lot of laughterand happiness. But Former study of the American sitcom The Big Bang Theory touches uponsyntactic analysis and irony. This thesis will analyze the verbal humor in the sitcom under theframework of Speech Act Theory which are put forward by Austin and developed by Searle. Itwill adopt qualitative and quantitative methods to study how humor is achieved and whatstrategies are mostly used in the sitcom.Through the study of humorous utterances in The Big Bang Theory, people will not onlyappreciate humor but also know how to produce humor in daily life. A good sense of humorcan strengthen the friends’ relationships and in some cases it can defend people fromawkwardness and embarrassment.
