Chapter One Introduction
1.0 Background of the study
Apart from synonymy and hyponymy, antonymy is another important lexical paradigmatic relation between words. It is an omnipresent linguistic phenomenon in every language. Lyon (1977) ever
notes that it is a general human tendency to categorize experience in terms of dichotomous contrast. That can explain the general existence of antonymy. The pairs of words like good/bad, come/go, and man/woman are typical instances of antonymy in common language utterances. According to the previous studies, antonymy exists in one’s language or utterance early from childhood and the language rules or related linguistic knowledge gained during that period will even influence his language behavior through the adulthood (Kagan 1984). When it comes to language acquisition, no matter for mother language or foreign language, antonym is a key teaching point. When we were little children, we must have known the opposite of ‘big’ is ‘small’, ‘long’ is opposed to ‘short’. Well, the professional definition of antonymy was ever a controversial topic. There existed many versions of the definition of antonymy before the one admitted today. The admitted definition and specific circumstances about its development will be presented later in
literature reviewing part. Antonym co-occurrence is a new trend of antonymy study, which marks a shift of antonymy research from paradigmatic relation (substitution) to syntagmatic relation (co-occurrence). In detail, antonyms can not only replace each other but also co-occur in specific linguistic unit. For instances, ‘an eye opened, the other closed’, ‘I love apple, hate banana’, ‘war and peace’, which are all instances of antonym co-occurrence. Jones noted in 2002 that antonym co-occurrence played an important role in many research fields including children’s language acquisition, psychological domain of word association testing, literature and metaphor (Jones, 2002).

1.1 Purpose and significance of the study
The existed studies about English antonym co-occurrence are almost based on the corpus of native speakers. Therefore, the author wonders that how is the usage of English antonym co-occurrence among English learners of China. Antonymy is a kind of semantic relation and can be called as a kind of lexical cohesion, which serves to make the discourse coherent. Therefore, the present study aims to see the usage of English antonym co-occurrence on Chinese learners especially from the point of discourse functions of antonymy co-occurrence. What’s
