CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION 

1.1 Research Background and Significance 
Tao  Te  Ching,  also  called  Lao-tzu,  Moral  Scriptures,  or  Five  Thousand Statements and so on, is a classic work of the Taoist School, and it is also a bright star of  the  Oriental  traditional  culture.  There  are  only  about  five  thousand  characters  in Tao Te Ching, but its content covers extensive fields, from the law of the universe to the moral ethics, from the philosophy of life to self-cultivation method. The complete Taoism  philosophical  system  and  the  dialectical  thought  of  Lao-tzu  are  explained  in this masterpiece. It has a significant and far-reaching influence on the Chinese ancient politics,  philosophy,  economy,  literature,  art  and  so  on,  bringing  ordinary  people inexhaustible spiritual wealth. Lao-tzu  (600  BC-  470  BC)  was  born  in  Luyi,  Henan  Province.  He  is  a  famous philosopher  in  ancient  China  and  the  founder  of  the  Taoism  School.  Lao-tzu  means “Old Master” literally and his name is generally considered as an honorific title. His primary  ideology  is  seen  in  Tao  Te  Ching,  which  has  a  notable  impact  on  Chinese people  and  society.  The  thought  of  Lao-tzu  becomes  the  basic  of  the  Taoism.  In ancient  China,  the  Taoism  was  a  philosophical  school  which  paralleled  to  the Confucianism.  The  most  important  thought  in  his  work  is  mainly  based  on  the philosophy of “naturalness”, “non-action” and “non-contention”.

1.2 Research Questions 
This paper discusses two English versions of Tao Te Ching form the perspective of fusion of horizons. Through comparing different versions at linguistic and cultural levels,  this  paper  analyzes  the  process  of  fusion  of  different  horizons  during translation  and  the  influence  of  different  translation  subjects’  horizons  on  the translation. So the research questions are as follows: 1)  How  do  different  horizons  intervene  in  the  translation  and  what  is  their influence on the translation?  2) How does the fusion of horizons work in the translation process? 3) How do different translators deal with the same original text at different levels? How do their unique horizons combine with horizons of the original text and horizons of the target culture?
