Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Research Motivations
One needs to learn when he wants to become capable, intelligent and flexible. Mentaland physical health is also the result of learning. From this, the fact that learning is animportant and essential activity that all human beings need to develop and survive is clearlyshown. There is no exaggeration to say that human being can not live without learning.Learning is one kind of human being’s basic and necessary experience.The philosophical basis of conceptual metaphor is experientialism which holds thatexperiences exert a great influence on human being’s language. The experience of learning, asan important experience in people’s life, must affect people’s language to some degree.Research shows that there are conceptual metaphors of learning which structure the conceptof learning by some other concepts both in Chinese and English. According to Cameron(2003: 13), “metaphors are linguistic devices to structure the concepts”, so conceptualmetaphors of learning not only depict learning from multiple angles but also help the reader tounderstand the concept of learning deeply. A deep study of these conceptual metaphors willhelp the reader know them better and have an idea of how conceptual metaphorsconceptualize the concept of learning. However, there have been few studies of conceptualmetaphors of learning so far.Metaphor has been a hot topic in the field of linguistics for hundreds of years for itsessential role in human being’s life. It has been studied from many perspectives. Since Lakoffand Johnson proposed the theory of conceptual metaphor, metaphor has been regarded as abasic way of thinking that human being uses to reason about the outside world. Conceptualmetaphor roots deeply into people’s minds and affects their behaviors both physically andverbally. From then on, many scholars began to study Chinese and English metaphoricalexpressions from the perspective of Conceptual Metaphor Theory. What they did is a greatcontribution to the study of metaphor, but they mainly concentrated on similarities anddifferences between Chinese and English metaphorical expressions. However, according toConceptual Metaphor Theory, conceptual metaphors and metaphorical expressions aredifferent notions. Conceptual metaphors are deeply rooted in people’s minds and are hardlyused. They are usually marked by capital letters. Metaphorical expressions are the linguisticrealizations of conceptual metaphors. Few of them paid attention to the systematic study ofconceptual metaphor itself, that is, the study of conceptual metaphor from the perspectives ofits experiential basis, cross-domain mappings, metaphorical expressions and its function tostructure other concepts.

1.2 Research Objectives and Research Questions
In order to study Chinese and English conceptual metaphors of learning, three researchobjectives are meant to be obtained in this
thesis.The experience of learning can influence human being’s language. This influence can beshown by metaphorical expressions which refer to entities or knowledge in the domain oflearning as entities or knowledge in other domains. Metaphorical expressions are actuallylinguistic realizations of conceptual metaphor which is deeply rooted in people’s minds.Therefore, based on collected Chinese and English expressions about learning, this thesis willfind out conceptual metaphors of learning in Chinese and English.A systemati
