Chapter One  Introduction 

1.1 Research background  
As  long  as  there  are  human  beings,  evaluation  comes  into  being  on  account  of  the mindset  and  intelligence  evolution.  With  the  advent  of  Internet  Plus  times  and We-media  era,  more  and  more  interaction  with  others,  things,  events  and  values  in time are commonplace, tremendously extending the range of objects to be evaluated, judged  and  appraised.  What’s  more,  we  humans  tend  to  share  our  various  attitudes with  others  so  as  to  achieve  the  interpersonal  meaning  in  the  society.  Therefore,  to investigate how people make an evaluation towards their life plays a significant role in  gaining  a  better  understanding  of  ourselves.  Fortunately,  appraisal  theory,  a linguistic perspective to delve into this aspect, has been duly set up.  In  order  to  extend  the  Systemic  Functional  Grammar’s  account  of  the interpersonal  meaning  by  attending  to  three  axes  along  which  the  inter-subjective stance  of  the  speaker  or  writer  may  vary,  Australian  Linguists  J.R.  Martin  and  P. White  have  advanced  the  appraisal  theory  since  the  late  1990s.  Generally  speaking, appraisal theory hinges upon the linguistic resources by which a text/speaker comes to express,  negotiate  and  naturalize  particularly  inter-subjective  and  ultimately ideological  positions.  It  is  concerned  more  particularly  with  the  language  of evaluation,  attitude  and  emotion,  and  with  a  set  of  resources  that  explicitly  that position a text, or a discourse’s proposals and propositions interpersonally.

1.2 Significance of the present research (research questions) 
As  a  new  branch  extended  from  the  framework  of  Systemic  Functional  Linguistics, appraisal theory has been proposed and developed to study how language is employed to  evaluate,  to  express  attitude  and  to  manage  interpersonal  positioning  and relationship. Apart from description, evaluation is one of the fundamental functions of language, researchers from a wealth of fields have already applied appraisal theory to varied  discourses  and  ultimately  achieved  quite  a  lot,  for  instance,  news  reports, editorials,  advertisement,  movie  reviews,  and  literary  criticism,  to  name  just  a  few.
