Chapter One INTRODUCTION  

In  Introduction  section,  the  focus  is  to  present  a  blueprint  of  the  whole  thesis. Therefore,  this  chapter  includes  three  parts:  background  of  the  study,  purpose  and significance of the study, and the overall structure of the study.   

1.1 Research Background of the Study 
With the frequent international academic exchanges, research article is gradually regarded  as  a  primary  vehicle  to  present  academic  achievements.  The  publication  of English  research  article  is  also  an  effective  way  to  learn  the  frontier  science  and technology  from  international  academic  community.  Therefore,  the  ability  of constructing  a  well-structured  English  research  article  is  one  of  necessary requirements for a scientific researcher. However, previous studies on research articles mainly  cover  the  following  three  aspects:  Firstly,  the  studies  on  stylistic  features  of English  research  articles;  secondly,  the  investigations  of  writing  conventions  of research  articles;  lastly,  the  investigations  on  linguistic  features  of  English  research articles. That‘s to  say, although  much research  efforts  have  been  made to show the features  of  the  writing  of  scientific  research  articles  (RAs),  there  is  a  lack  of  studies on issues related to genre analysis in terms of the textual organization. To some extent, the  biggest  problem  for  a  Chinese  scientific  researcher  may  be  the  textual organization.

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Study 
After  the  purpose  of  this  study  is  presented,  the  basic  research  purposes  are proposed respectively. Then the significance of this study is briefly described.  To begin  with, the research attempts to  examine the  overall  generic  structures of each English research article surveyed and analyzed in this study. Moreover, it aims to investigate  whether  there  are  differences  of  generic  structures  in  research  articles  on Material Engineering written by native English and native Chinese writers. Secondly,  the  move-step  structures  of  three  main  sections  (Introduction, Experimental, Results and Discussion) in research articles of respective corpus will be explored, in attempting to investigate whether there are differences between them.
