Chapter One Introduction 

1.1 Research Background

Equipped with the natural principle of “survival the fittes t”, Eco-translatology answers the ques tions of “what translation is”, “how to translate” and “who will translate”, which m akes it unique. Unlike  the  interpreting  studies in the pa st  which lay stres s  on the process of interpreting  itself,  such  as the IT  (Interpretive  Theory) paradigm ,  CP  (Cognitive Processing)  paradigm, NL  (neurolingusitics) paradigm  and so on, Eco-translatologyemphasizes the central status of  the translator, assuming translation is the production of the translator’s adaption and selection; and it also rationalizes the translator’s  subjectivity,  maintaining  that  the  translator h as  to adapt to the certa in translational  eco-environment.  This theo ry  sees  the translation p rocess  as the adaptation and selection of translators in a dynamic way and the translation method as three-dimensional transformations.In  the  information  age, a ll  the coun tries  are  trying  to ge t  more  political, economic and cultural communication with othe r countries. International conference, as  an ef fective  means  of communication,  plays  an important role in foreign activities.The United Nations as an intergovernmental organization is one of the ideal places where they could have effective communication, since the ob jectives of it are maintaining international peace and security, promoting human rights, fostering social and economic development, protecting the en vironment, and providing hum anitarian aid  in cases of fa mine,  natural disaster  and arm ed  conflict.  The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) is one of the six principal organs of the U nited Nations and it is also the only one in which all m ember nations have equal representation. General  Debate of the UNGA  is a plenar y  session in which heads of S tate  and Government are invited to speak. A nd according to the rules in place fo r the General Debate, the statements should be in the United Nations official languages like Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian or Spanish, and will be interpr eted by the United Nations  interpreters. F or  mutual  understanding  and further developm ent,  every country shouldthoroughly understand others’ domestic  issues and their concerns on international  affairs.  But since the m other  tongue of m any  speakers is not English,interpreters  play an im portant  role  during the whole process. Moreover , because  this  is a kind  of si multaneous  interpretation  in  a fo rmal  international conference, the whole environment would be much more complicated than any other circumstances. It is significant to analyze the whole circumstance to help improve the interpretation quality.

1.2 Objectives of the Study
