This document contains instructions and advice on how to approach the researching and writing of your Business dissertation. In general, the aim of writing a dissertation is to bring theory and practice together to explore your hypothesis (or research question) and to draw conclusions from your analysis.

As each individual dissertation is, by definition, a unique piece of work, it is impossible to give a precise indication of the content of each piece of work in this study guide. You should follow the advice given below when approaching your work. Keep these points in mind during your work and make sure that you discuss your progress with your supervisor at regular intervals.
Since you are on a distance-learning programme we assume virtually all students will be in work and the style of dissertation will often take the form of a work-based project.

2. Assessment Schedule – Key dates

This module is assessed entirely by means of coursework. The assessment strategy aims to test both breadth and depth of reading in the chosen topic.
There are three pieces of assessed work. These are the proposal worth 5% of the module grade, the initial literature review worth 10% and the dissertation itself worth 85% of the module marks. All three pieces of work will be marked in accordance with the assessment criteria below and the grade descriptors on the final pages of this guide.
Key dates and deadlines

The dates for submitting your initial idea and then the 3 assessed parts of this module can be seen in the SUBMIT ASSIGNMENTS section of the NILE site.

We will try and give feedback between each stage – but if you have any extensions that may be difficult. The main complication for supervisees wishing to access staff will always be the need for tutors to take Summer holidays. Please stick to any dates staff say you need to submit draft in order to get feedback.
