Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
English writing has been considered as one of the most significant skills of SLA. Writing not only requires students to skillfully master the basic linguistic knowledge, such as spelling, punctuation and grammar, but also sets high demands on the ability of organizing the whole passage. The New Curriculum Standard (Ministry of
Education, 2003) requires that senior high school graduates should be able to retell and write summaries according to given material, and to write short
essays or reports independently with the guidance of language information and graphic charts. Besides, it demands that students should be capable of writing semantically coherent and structurally complete passages as well as explicitly exhibit their own opinions and attitude towards a certain issue. There should be zero-tolerance of serious grammatical errors in their
essays. However, the current writing teaching in senior high school is far from satisfactory, let alone the writing ability of students. With the constantly emerging teaching information, how to update English writing teaching is worth consideration. Over the years, high school writing teaching has gone into a dilemma. Because of the heavy burden of English teaching tasks and the limited English classes in senior high schools, many teachers have to rush to complete the teaching schedules. As a result, the writing teaching has more or less been neglected. Students can’t get enough guidance in writing techniques from their teachers and it is no wonder that their writing performances are not encouraging.

1.2 Significance of the Study
As is stated above, we can see there are lots of problems existing in students’ writing. And the current writing teaching situation is not encouraging. Considering this, it is urgent to find effective and feasible ways to improve students’ writing ability, and to combine reading and writing is an option worth trying. There is no denying that practice makes perfect. Enough amount of writing practice indeed can enhance students’ writing ability. However, reading and writing, as two fundamental language skills, are closely connected (谢, 1994: 50).
