摘要:This paper gives some ideas to the study of Robinson Crusoe as well as to the study of modernity. The study reveals that the two aspects, the progressiveness and limitation of modernity, existed from its very beginning. However, the two aspects of modernity were covered by the remaining influence of God and traditional value in the 18th century. This influence makes Robinson’s optimism for modernity.

Ⅰ. Introduction
Modernity, as a term of history, in general refers to the mature politics and cultures of the bourgeoisie that began in the period of the Enlightenment Movement in the 17th century. The modernity changes human life significantly; it helps people to get rid of the depression of medieval feudalism and to seek their fortune. However, when the modernity displays its progressiveness, it also has the limitation. It’s beyond any disputation that the modernity greatly pushes forward the development of western society in the fields of politics, economy, Science and culture. But new problems arise with the advance of it, too. Robinson Crusoe was published in the year of 1719 when the Enlightenment Movement was at its early stage. Apart from many other values, the novel deserves an intensive study for its truthful record of the thoughts, cultures, ideologies and social lives of the people in the 18th century. As far as the study of modernity is concerned, Robinson Crusoe is a particularly significant material. In this novel, the industry, resourcefulness, and solitary courage of the major character Crusoe makes him an exemplary individual. But his vices are social, and his urge to subjugate others is highly objectionable. In bringing both sides together into one complex character, Defoe gives the people a fascinating glimpse into the successes, failures, and contradictions of modern man. This is just the contradictory characteristic of the modernity. So in Robinson Crusoe, the progressiveness and the limitation of modernity are reflected sufficiently.
1.1   Brief Introduction of Daniel Defoe
Daniel Defoe was born in London in 1660. Defoe was the son of a middle-class wax and candle merchant named James Foe, and kept his family name until he was forty years of age, when he added the aristocratic prefix with which we have grown familiar.
Defoe had many different identities, as merchant, poet, journalist, and prisoner. This theme of changeable identities would later be expressed in the life of Robinson Crusoe, who became a merchant, slave, plantation owner, and even an informal king. When Defoe was nearly sixty years of age he turned to fiction and wrote the great work by which he is remembered. Robinson Crusoe was an instant success, and the author became famous all over Europe. Defoe’s works focus on the actual conditions of everyday life, and avoidance of the courtly and the heroic made Defoe became a revolutionary in English literature and helped define the new genre of the novel. Stylistically, Defoe was a great innovator. Dispensing with the ornate and showy style associated with the upper classes, Defoe used the simple, direct, fact-based style of the middle classes, which became the new standard for the English novel. With Robinson Crusoe’s theme of solitary human existence, Defoe paved the way for the central modern theme of alienation and isolation.
1.2     Brief Introduction of Robinson Crusoe
Robinson Crusoe was written under the Enlightenment of a real story in 18th century. A Scottish seafaring man in Britain ship named Alexander Slake clashed against his captain, and was deserted in an isolated island, which had the distance of 500 meters far away from the coast of Chile. He lived alone there for about four years; he was finally saved by a famous sailor and was taken home in论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
