Chapter One INTRODUCTION
1.1 Research Background
Chomsky’s Theory of Universal Grammar (UG) was originally put forward to answer “the logical problem of language acquisition” (White, 2003, p. 4) in child first language acquisition (FLA), that is, how children acquire the first language (L1) with relative ease and complete success in spite of the poverty of L1 stimulus. Since it was proposed, it has been introduced to the field of second language acquisition (SLA) by a number of researchers. Furthermore, the focus of relevant SLA studies has shifted from “UG access” to “what is accessible, how to access” in the 1980s and early 1990s, then to “the initial state of second language (L2)” and more recently to “the interlanguage grammar (ILG) impairment”. Among them, the first two issues are explored in the framework of Principles and Parameters (P&P) Theory while the latter two are discussed within the theoretical framework of the Minimalist Program (MP). Currently, the development of functional categories in ILG has been investigated and examined by quite a number of L2 researchers. And the acquisition of verbal inflectional morphology associated with English functional category T (tense) by second language learners (L2ers) has attracted considerable attention and research interest both at home and abroad. In the course of L2 study, it is not uncommon that L2ers, especially the beginners, frequently omit and incorrectly use the verbal inflection in their spoken and written English. Some L2ers often neglect inflectional morphology during the early period of L2 learning, or at intermediate or advanced stages, or even in their end-state grammars. This phenomenon, which relates to their interlanguage system, seems to persistently occur in the whole process of L2 study. And the question that interests researchers most is whether or not L2ers’ frequent omission of verbal inflection indicates that functional category T in their ILGs is impaired.

1.2 Objectives and Significance of the Study
Against the above background, the aim of the present study is to examine the marking of English verbal inflectional morphology associated with functional category T by English majors1 based on the data from Spoken and Written English Corpus of Chinese Learners (SWECCL, 2.0), in order to see whether they omit and misuse verbal inflection in their compositions, and meanwhile, &nbs
