1.1 Research background
The
Abstract, as a full-fledged genre for scientific researchers to persuade readers and promote their works in academic discourse, has been widely researched in the fields of rhetoric, linguistics, and the teaching of academic writing. Function as the point of departure of most research articles, the abstract has gradually become an indispensable part in the writing of the research article and is of vital importance for readers to understand the entirety of article. The abstract is found at the beginning of an article and as suggested by Pho (2008;231), it more or less “sells” the article. In this sense, the generic feature of abstract is no longer defined in terms of specific lexis and syntax; instead, it is as a case of interaction between individuals, acting in a social, institutional context (Gillaerts & Van de Vedle, 2010: 129). It can be deduced from this view that, instead of merely presenting the associated text for audiences in an external way, the abstract also pursues internal interaction between writers and potential readers. Therefore, the ultimate purpose, the rhetorical construction and the persuasive intent of an abstract are all different from the article itself. The purpose of Research article writers is to certify the article as accredited and legitimate knowledge, to acquire recognition and to search for consensus for their claims through communication with readers. Abstract, on the other hand, has a more urgent purpose of showing the value of the article, in other words, “to persuade readers that the article is worth reading” (Hyland, 2000: 64) and convince readers to accept the novelty and credibility of the accompany research. Interactional resources like stance and engagement markers are important means to promote communication, strengthen statements and engage readers in abstract writing. Therefore, interactional resources provide writers with a better way of promoting their research, playing a crucial role in emphasizing the significance of the present research. As Crismore et al. (1993) have emphasized, metadiscoursal features enable writers to convince readers of the significance of the position adopted in the abstract and conveyed in the whole study.
