Chapter 1 Introduction
This is an empirical research about the application of lexical chunk theory tosecondary vocational school’s English vocabulary teaching. The main purpose of thischapter is to pave the way for the later chapters. So, this part mainly introduces thebackground of the research, common problems of English vocabulary teaching andlearning in middle school, the significance and purpose of the research and theorganization of the
thesis.
1.1 Background of the Research
D. A Wilkins (1972), the British famous linguist, claims that “without grammar, verylittle can be conveyed, without vocabulary, nothing can be conveyed” (Wilkin, 1972:9-10).River (1981) believes that learning and mastering enough vocabulary is the key to use aforeign language successfully, if there is no vocabulary, people will not be able to make useof what they have learned about the structure and function of a language. Mc Carthy (1991)also points out that without sufficient vocabulary to express one’s feelings or understandother people’s ideas, there can’t be any meaningful communication with each other, nomatter how well the learner masters the grammar of the foreign language and the secondlanguage, and no matter how successfully the learner learns the sounds. From this we cansee, vocabulary, as the foundation of all kinds of language activities, plays a vital role inforeign language learning and teaching. Mastering enough vocabulary is the prerequisitecondition for the learners to learn English well. The quantity and quality of vocabulary thatstudent have mastered can directly affect their English learning efficiency and their abilityof listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating.To sum up, vocabulary is throughout the whole process of English learning and playsa critical role in all aspects of this process. Therefore, helping students enlarge theirvocabulary and improve their English free expression ability is an important teachingmission for middle schools’ English teachers.In order to know more about the current situation of the vocabulary teaching andlearning in middle school, the author visited 13 middle schools, including junior middleschool, senior middle school and secondary vocational school in Shan Xi and Shan DongProvince during September to December, 2014. By the mean of classroom observation andby communicating with students and English teachers, the author understands that there arestill many problems in middle school’s vocabulary teaching and learning.

1.2 Purpose of the Research
Although the research of lexical chunk theory in foreign countries has verged tomature, it is still a relatively new field for Chinese English teaching research. In China, onthe one side, although there are many researchers and teachers have realized theimportance of lexical chunk to English vocabulary teaching and learning, they still have notime and energy to carry out a deep study on lexical chunk theory under the pressure ofmiddle school’s urgency schedules and examinations. On the other side, despite someresearchers have begun to study the lexical chunk theory, there are still some limitationsabout their study. Firstly, the majority of these researches are conducted theoretically, andthey are still in the primary stage. In addition, most of these studies only discussed thesurface phenomenon, without providing with a more detailed lexical chunk teaching andlearning pla
