Chapter One Introduction
1.1 The Background of the Study
As the main means of human communication, verbal communication behavior has never been thesingle-mode behavior in the context. In the process of realizing the discourse, there are plenty ofnonverbal factors, such as pitch, speed, and tone which have the non-linguistic features. In traditionaldiscourse analysis, the above factors are analyzed as contextual factors or auxiliary factors of verbalbehavior. In fact, human’s verbal behavior fundamentally has always been multimodal. Mode refers tothe phenomenon of communicating with the use of hearing, sight, smell, taste and touch etc., throughlanguage, images, sounds, smells, and other symbols. The communicating means or devices it relies on ,such as paper and network, are media.Therefore, multimodal teaching is the bridge between language learning context and the real contextof the target language in the language teaching. It will become the trend of language teaching in thefuture. But the fact is that although multimodal has always been there, it has not been sufficiently noticedin the foreign language teaching. In college English teaching, visual and acoustic modes occupy the mainor even the only position. Other modals are completely excluded out of college English class. Itcontraries to the ultimate goal of language teaching because of artificially setting a situation which isdifferent from real multimodal situation in the process of information input. On the other hand, in thelanguage teaching environment which lay one-sided emphasis on a single mode, language learners proneto boredom. It seriously affects the effects of the college English teaching. Therefore, multimodalteaching has become a major subject for studying the language teaching nowadays.

1.2 The Significance and Purpose of the Study
Vocabulary is a component of language, and it is also very important for communication.Vocabulary level is an important part of communicative competence. Vocabulary size can show students’English competence. Information contained in vocabulary far exceeds other components of language.Vocabulary and phrases are the core of language use, therefore, vocabulary teaching should be the coreof language teaching. A lot of researches found that understanding vocabulary and using vocabulary arethe headache for English learners, and most of the mistakes are related to vocabulary. With theimprovement of students’ English level, difficulties which are caused by grammar will become less and less, but more difficulties will come from vocabulary. Vocabulary size not only can influence students’listening comprehension and reading comprehension, but also can influence students’ oral and writtenexpression abilities. Having no enough vocabulary, students can not communicate with others naturallyand can not understand English articles well; having no enough vocabulary, neither speaking nor writingwill express meaning clearly. Therefore, vocabulary teaching is the core of language teaching, at thesame time, vocabulary teaching is also the obstacle of language teaching.Multimodal discourse studies which rose in the 1990s are based on systemic functional linguistics.It extends the range of discourse study to nonverbal symbols, such as voice, images, music, and Internet.It advocates making full use of various symbolic resources and teaching methods in the teaching, in orderto achieve the optimization of t
