Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Background of the Research
In the context of globalization and fast development of China’s economy, it is a necessity for the young in this country to learn and use En glish. English has been taught for more than one hundred years in China, and it is a com pulsory course for all the Chinese students. Although the language teaching methods were changed for many times and went over many reforms, there are on ly a few students who can speak fluent English and communicate with foreigners. Most English learners in China just treat English as a sub ject, not a language for communication. They try their best to get high marks in exams, but seldom use English to communicate with others. The English courses for higher vocational co llege students are aim ed at training their listening, speaking, reading, writing and trans lation skills, which are the five basic s kills for English learners. Language learning contains two parts, the language input and the language output. In our daily communicatio n, learners get m ost language input by listening. On the other hand, speaking is the main way of language output. So speaking plays a significant role in communication. Nevertheless, in the higher vocational college classes, the traditional English teaching m ethods put too much ef fort in im proving students' reading and writing skills, focusing on exam s. Meanwhile, the othe r equally crucial two skills, sp eaking and listening, are often ignored by both teachers and students in higher vocational colleges. In the English classes of higher vocational colleges, teachers and professors spend too much time in explaining glossaries and translation of texts, while the students spend most of their time in taking
notes and reading texts, and very few of them want to pra ctice their listening o r speaking skills, which are not included in the final exams. Moreover, since oral English is not a part of final exam s in many higher vocational colleges, students do not care it at all. They just consider English as a subject or an exam they m ust pass, not a language for communication. Obviously, the cu rrent English teaching approaches in vocational colleg e cannot enable Chinese students to use English to communicate with others.
