Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Background of this thesis
In natural language processing, the study of polysemy has always been the researchemphasis and difficulty. By using computer technology, word sense disambiguation is amethod to classify the relating semantic and syntactic features of a polysemy in order toidentify its correct meaning in a specific context without the participation of human brain.This method is scientific and shortcut and has been used in the studies of nouns and modalverbs successfully (Yu, 2012; Chang, Zhang, Hou & Hui, 2013). However, the study ofword sense disambiguation of English prepositions is still few.English prepositions, especially English prepositions denoting spatial relations areone of the high-frequency vocabularies (Quirk, 1985). According to a research conductedby Zhang, English prepositions occupy 15% of the researched articles (Liu and Hu, 2007).English prepositions are also polysemys, which means that their basic senses plusextended senses can be more than ten. As a result, the researches about the classificationof their different senses and word sense disambiguation become an important and difficulttask. Throughout the researches both at home and abroad, it is easy to conclude that theresearches in regard to sense classification of prepositions can be divided into twodirections. One is making a semantic classification of prepositions from bothmacroscopical and microcosmic view (Halliday, 1994; Yong, 2007). The other isdiscussing the prototype sense of a preposition, the relationship among senses and thesense formation mechanism of prepositions through the employment of cognitivelinguistic methods (Wang, 2004; Peng, 2011). The ultimate purpose of sense classificationis sense distinction and comprehension. Meanwhile, in these researches, scholars tend touse traditional linguistic theories and methods to study this issue.

1.2 Object of this thesis
This study is based on a 350000 word corpus which is extracted from real naturallanguage in which preposition on appears 2114 times. According to the actual usage of on,this paper divides the total senses of on into three large classes. By using Formal ConceptAnalysis tool and by comparing the different context of the three large senses, somesemantic and syntactic features are extracted for word sense disambiguation. The attributefeatures are also studied in the following part. It is expected that a new rule extractionmethod can be found through the analysis of different attribute features. This paper is apioneer work in the research of word sense disambiguation and attribute features analysisof English preposition on, and will provide a scientific method in the distinction ofploysemy senses. It will also make contribution in the field of machine translation andother natural language processing areas.

2.1 Studies of preposition on
Appeared in Old and Middle English period (1100-1250s), English prepositions havea very short history (Li, 1991). English prepositions evolve from adverbs when Englishlanguage transfers from a comprehensive means based language (Old English) to ananalytical means based language (Modern English) (Li，1991).
